Science Curriculum at Bordon Infant School
Intent
Here at Bordon Infant school we give every child the opportunity to be curious, ask their own questions and be exhilarated by the science they experience with us. We give every child a broad and balanced science curriculum which enables them to confidently explore and discover what is around them, with ‘working scientifically’ at its core. We want our children to have a passion for science. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are. We want them to grow up with the knowledge, want and internal drive to break out of the box and become a plant geneticist, an environmental scientist or maybe a cardiothoracic surgeon.
Here at Bordon Infant School we believe Science holds such a vital role in the world’s future and endeavour not to just teach the minimum statutory requirements of the science National Curriculum but to explore the wider aspects of science with hopes that the excitement, enthusiasm and passion it creates will help them reach for the greater opportunities in life.
Implementation
Here at Bordon Infant school we believe that our children should learn the science content in chunks, throughout the year, allowing children to develop their knowledge and skills more effectively whilst also maintaining knowledge from previous learning. Through our planning, we involve problem solving opportunities that allow children to find out for themselves. Children are encouraged to ask their own questions and be given opportunities to use their scientific skills and research to discover the answers. This curiosity is celebrated within the classroom. Planning involves teachers creating engaging lessons, often involving high-quality resources to aid understanding of conceptual knowledge with a strong emphasis on working as practically as possible. Teachers use precise questioning in class to test conceptual knowledge and skills and use both formal and informal assessment regularly to identify those children who are striving and those with gaps in learning.
All children at Bordon Infant School are offered a wide range of extra-curricular activities, visits, trips and visitors to complement and broaden the curriculum. These are purposeful and link with the knowledge being taught in class. In our yearly Science Week the children are fully immersed in the awe and wonder of what, only the subject of, science can produce. In Science Week the children also gain the broader acquisition and application of knowledge and skills alongside peers of different ages and often involving families and the wider community.
Impact
Children at Bordon Infant School leave us with the enthusiasm, passion and skills to aid them in becoming independent thinkers, compelled to always ask ‘What if?’.
